Frequently Asked Questions

Do you accept insurance?

At this time, we’re out of network with all insurance providers. But don’t worry—we’re here to help you navigate the out-of-network reimbursement process and can provide a superbill (detailed receipts with insurance codes) for you to submit to your health insurance provider to seek reimbursement.

We accept the following forms of payment: FSA, HSA, Credit Card, Check and cash.

At what age should I seek help for my child?

We proudly support children from birth through age 21! For more information, be sure to check out our blog posts on age-appropriate milestones and when to consider an evaluation, as well as what to expect during an initial evaluation. They’re filled with helpful insights!

Where do we start?

An initial evaluation is required before beginning therapy. Contact us at speechspotstl@gmail.com or 314-626-4761 to schedule the evaluation! Most evaluation are able to be scheduled within a month with therapy starting immediately following.

If your child has had an evaluation within the past 12 months, you may be able to forego the initial evaluation with us and start therapy right away. Contact us and we can discuss!

My child brought home an initial screening form suggesting a follow up, what do I do now?

Initial screenings help us quickly identify if speech therapy MIGHT be needed. We encourage you to reach out to the therapist who conducted the evaluation for any follow-up questions. If your child was screened by someone other than our clinic, that’s okay too! We are happy to look over the screening results you were given and determine the next best steps. In most cases, a complete evaluation is recommended to take a closer look and determine if therapy is necessary. We're here to guide you through the process!

Do I need a referral?

A referral is not necessary to start speech, language, or occupational therapy. However, if you are interested in submitting a superbill to your insurance for out-of-network reimbursement, we suggest your contact your insurance directly to see if they require a referral.

What will the cost be for my child to receive therapy services?

Our pricing depends on the type of service and the length of the session you’re looking for your child. After the initial evaluation, your child’s therapist will go over the plan and pricing with you. We also offer flexible billing options, so you can choose between per session or monthly payments. Additionally, we never want cost of therapy to be a reason a child misses out on exceptional therapy. If financial costs are an issue for you, please let us know and we will work something out!

Is group therapy an option?

We primarily offer 1-on-1 therapy sessions. This way your child receives the undivided attention of the therapist and will solely target your child’s goals during the session. We do offer a few limited group sessions as camps during the year! We’ve run toddler language camps, social skills camps, kindergarten readiness camps, and apraxia camps in the past. If you are interested in hearing about any upcoming camps we will be offering, contact us as we’ll provide all the details!

How long will the session be?

Sessions are 30 minutes or 45 minutes, depending on your child’s age and needs and based on recommendations from the initial evaluation. At the end of each session, we’ll chat about how it went, share some home practice ideas, and answer any questions you might have.

How long will my child need speech services?

Every child is unique, so it’s a bit tricky to answer this without an evaluation first. After your child’s initial evaluation, their therapist will provide a personalized plan, length of session (30 or 45 minutes) and frequency of sessions (once or twice a week) they recommend. Total length of therapy will depend on your child’s progress during sessions and how many skills they are targeting. Just like any skill, practicing (and practicing well!) outside of the therapy session will only help to better your child’s skills faster. Our therapists will send homework for your child to work on between therapy sessions.

In general, most children with mild speech or language issues (like 1-2 sound errors) typically spend about 9 months to a year in therapy. For moderate to severe challenges, a longer duration is usually suggested. Remember, every child is always growing and developing, so their therapy journey may change over time. As you work together with your child’s therapist, goals and targets will adapt to reflect their progress!

What should I be doing as a parent?

A parent’s active involvement in their child’s speech development is incredibly beneficial! After each session, we provide feedback and share tools and suggestions for home activities to help accelerate the therapy process and reinforce effective techniques. Together, we can make great progress!

How do I refer a patient for services?

Please email referrals to speechspotstl@gmail.com

My child receives therapy at school already, can you supplement these services?

Absolutely! We frequently support the services children receive at school. Our therapists work closely with school therapists to ensure coordinated care and effective therapy treatment. We’re all about teamwork!

We didn't qualify for First Steps or school services, can you help?

Yes! We often support the services children receives at their school. Our therapists collaborate with the school therapists to coordinate care and therapy treatment. Because we do not receive state funding (like public schools and First Steps), we are not required to follow state regulations in terms of qualifying a child for therapy. We are able to use developmental norms and skills a child should have at given ages to determine if your child qualifies for therapy.

How often do we come to therapy

Most clients see their therapist once or twice a week.

How long are sessions?

Sessions are 30 or 45 minutes, with time allotted after for your child's therapist to review with you and answer any questions. Because we believe consistently is key for your child as well as their progress, your child will see the same therapist at the same day and time every week.

Do you offer Telehealth services?

Yes! We offer HIPAA secure, teletherapy services.

Can I be present with my child during their session?

Yes! We love having parents or loved ones attend sessions. We will never tell a parent or caregiver that they cannot sit in on an evaluation or therapy session! However, there are times when children may be more productive without their caregivers in the room. In those cases, we’ll make recommendations on what’s best for your child and discuss with your what will work best. Your involvement is important, and we’ll work together to find the right balance!
